Mastering the "Mendes" Energy
Released in 2019, "If I Can't Have You" is a masterclass in modern male pop vocals. It combines a driving, rhythmic verse with an explosive, falsetto-heavy chorus. The track is set in B Major and stays high-energy throughout, leaving little room for vocal rest.
Shawn Mendes is known for his ability to mix breathy texture with powerful, clear belts. To sing this correctly, you need agility. You must be able to switch gears instantly between your chest voice (verses) and your head voice (chorus).
Phase 1: The Verses (Rhythmic Precision)
The verses ("I can't write one song that's not about you") are sung in a comfortable chest range for most tenors. However, the challenge is rhythm. You need to be slightly staccato—short and punchy.
The Trap: Don't drag the notes. If you sing too legato (smoothly), you will fall behind the beat and lose the pop energy. Keep your consonants crisp, especially the 't's and 'k's.
